Buses are Rome’s most widespread means of public transportation – there are 338 lines and over 8000 stops. Taking the bus isn’t always quick or comfortable, but it does get you to most places in the city. If you’re planning a long trip, though, it’s worth investing in an app that can provide real-time tracking and departure times to avoid any unpleasant surprises. There are plenty of options available, such as Moovit and Probus Rome.
Large digital signs and real-time arrival clocks are also located at key transit stops throughout the district. You can also download the Centro mobile app for Android or iOS to track a bus’s location and estimated arrival time. Simply enter the Stop ID of the bus stop you’re at to view next scheduled arrival times.
Aside from the metro, buses and trams are your main means of getting around in the Eternal City. Single-use tickets are valid for 100 minutes (or you can swap buses within that timeframe) and a 24-hour or 48-hour pass covers multiple trips on all transit services including the Metro and trams and some urban trains.
It’s also worth remembering that many of Rome’s top attractions are relatively close together - the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are only two stops away, for example, while the Colosseum and Spanish Steps can be easily reached on foot. It may be tempting to hop on a bus or metro to save yourself some walking, but with the right app, it can often be much easier and more convenient to walk.
